- Informing Others of Your Duty to Report
We strongly encourage mandated reporters to notify someone that you are obligated to report information to the Title IX office. If you are speaking with a student and believe they may disclose information you are required to report, it may be helpful to notify the student that you are a mandated reporter. An example of appropriate language is included below:
"I'm sorry to interrupt you, I am interested in hearing more about your situation and what happened. It seems like you are about to tell me something important. I want you to know that as an employee, I am required to report certain information to the University. If this situation is related to sexual misconduct, I will need to submit a report to the Title IX office so they can send you an email to offer support and resource options. If you would prefer to speak with someone confidentially, I can provide confidential on-campus resources to you. If you are comfortable, please continue so I can do my best to support you."
If you are not able to share your mandated reporter status prior to a disclosure, it is still encouraged that you notify the student of your reporting obligations so the person is not surprised when they receive an email from the Title IX office and they do not feel their trust has been violated.
